Pai-Yen Chen is a Professor and University Scholar in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). He received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 2013, and M.S. and B.S. degrees from National Chiao Tung University in 2006 and 2004, respectively. He was a Research Scientist at Intellectual Ventures Laboratory (2013-2014) and a Research Staff in the Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (2006-2009). His research spans a wide range of multidisciplinary areas, including applied electromagnetics, metamaterials and metasurfaces, RF and microwave antennas and circuits, wireless sensors and systems, bioelectronics, nanoelectronics, and nanophotonics. He has published numerous papers in high-ranked journals such as IEEE transactions, Nature, Nature Electronics, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Communications, and Science Advances. In addition, he has published a book and several book chapters, and holds multiple U.S. patents.
Prof. Chen is a Fellow of IEEE and the recipient of numerous prestigious honors, including National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award, IEEE Sensors Council Technical Achievement Award (advanced career), IEEE Sensors Council Distinguished Lecturer, IEEE Sensors Council Young Professional Award, IEEE AP-S Raj Mittra Travel Grant, IEEE Chicago Distinguished R&D Award, SPIE Rising Researcher Award, IOP Emerging Leader in Measurement Science and Technology, ACES Early Career Award, Electromagnetics Academy Young Scientist Award, URSI Young Scientist Award, AFRL Faculty Fellowship, UAAT International Visiting Scholar, University of Illinois Scholar, UIC Researcher of the Year, Donald Harrington Fellowship, United Microelectronics Corporation Scholarship, along with multiple best paper and design awards from flagship IEEE conferences. He currently serves as Track Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, Senior Editor for the IEEE Journal of Selected Areas in Sensors, Topical Editor for the IEEE Sensors Journal, and Associate Editor for the Optics Express. He was Associate Editor for IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters (2023-2025), IEEE Journal of Radio Frequency Identification (2018-2024), and IEEE Journal of Electromagnetics, RF and Microwaves in Medicine and Biology (2017-2023). He currently serves as the chair of IEEE Chicago AP-S/MTT-S Joint Chapter. He was the founding chair of the IEEE Chicago Sensors Chapter and the ACES Board of Directors.
His research interests include reconfigurable antennas and metasurfaces, microwave and millimeter-wave imaging, metamaterials and holographic surfaces, and applied electromagnetics. He has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings in these areas.
