Presentation

Title: "Ground to Orbit: Measuring Antennas for Space-Based Applications in the African Context"

Abstract: From Earth observation satellites to rural broadband via LEO constellations, Africa's digital future depends on the performance of radio frequency systems. This talk focuses on antenna measurement techniques and tools that ensure the success of space-based communication systems. Drawing on examples from global best practices, we will discuss how these methods can support Kenya's ambitions in satellite data services, climate resilience, and agricultural transformation. We will also explore how local institutions and industries can leverage antenna testing infrastructure to build regional capacity in aerospace engineering.

About the Speaker

Dr. Parinaz Naseri

Dr. Parinaz Naseri is a member of the IEEE AP-S Technical Committee on Antenna Measurements (TCAM). She received her B.Sc. from the University of Tehran, M.Sc. from the University of Alberta, and Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, all in electrical and computer engineering. Her research, supported by the European Space Agency, focuses on electromagnetic surfaces for space applications using machine learning.

Dr. Naseri has authored over 30 publications and has been actively involved with IEEE, serving as Chair of the UofT IEEE AP-S Student Chapter (2020–2023). Her recognitions include the IEEE Toronto Outstanding New Leader Award (2022), IEEE AP-S Doctoral Research Grant (2021), and nomination for the Governor General's Gold Medal (2022–2023).

This presentation perfectly aligns with TCAM's mission of advancing antenna measurement techniques for emerging applications, particularly in space exploration and communication systems. Dr. Naseri's work demonstrates how our committee members are driving innovation in antenna measurements for transformative technologies globally.
