Nader Behdad
Biography:
Nader Behdad received the B.S. degree from Sharif University of Technology (2000) and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (2003, 2006). He is currently the Harvey D. Spangler Professor and Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research focuses on applied electromagnetics, including electrically small antennas, phased arrays, high-power microwaves, and biomedical RF applications, primarily sponsored by the U.S. government. He holds 24 U.S. patents and has authored over 170 journal papers and 300 conference papers.
Dr. Behdad has supervised the dissertations of 30 Ph.D. and 16 M.S. students and mentored 33 visiting scholars and post-doctoral fellows. His honors include the NSF CAREER Award, AFOSR and ONR Young Investigator Awards, and several University of Wisconsin-Madison faculty awards, including the McFarland-Bascom, Harvey D. Spangler, and Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professorships and the Byron Bird Award for Excellence in a Research Publication.

Qualifications:
Dr. Behdad’s qualifications combine elite technical achievement with proven administrative leadership. He is a Fellow of IEEE (AP-S nominated) and a recipient of the Society’s highly prestigious honors, including the John Kraus Antenna Award and the H.A. Wheeler, R.W.P. King, and P.L.E. Uslenghi Prize Paper Awards. Beyond his service as AP-S Paper Awards Chair and TPC Co-Chair of our flagship symposium, he holds significant leadership roles at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and served on the IEEE NPSS Fellow Evaluation Committee. These diverse roles provide the strategic oversight and collaborative skills necessary to effectively serve as an IEEE AP-S AdCom member.

Position Statement:
If elected to the AdCom, I aim to foster a transparent, inclusive, and industrially relevant Society. My priorities include:
- Strengthening Industry Ties: Investigating barriers to industrial engagement and identifying value-driven models that connect companies with our student talent year-round to incentivize sustained involvement with the society and enhance sponsorship of AP-S events.
- Revitalizing Peer Review: Working with editorial boards to explore ways to support Associate Editors as arbiters of technical rigor, while identifying sustainable methods to recognize reviewers, increase participation from top-tier experts, and mitigate burnout of volunteer reviewers and editorial boards.
- Cultivating the Next Generation: Identifying strategies to attract new members and support their growth through all career stages, ensuring they find lifelong value and remain active contributors to the mission of IEEE AP-S.
- Democratic Engagement: Exploring opportunities to enhance our election processes, including evaluating the potential of models like ranked-choice voting to further empower our global membership.

Candidate Name:
Filippo Capolino
Biography:
Filippo Capolino received the Laurea degree (cum laude) and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Florence, Italy, in 1993 and 1997, respectively. After postdoctoral appointments at Boston University and at the University of Houston, he joined the University of Siena, Italy, where he served as Assistant Professor from 2002 to 2008. Since 2008, he has been with the University of California, Irvine, where he is currently Dean's Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He also held visiting appointments in France and Spain, including the 2022 Cathedra of Excellence at the University of Carlos III of Madrid.
His research interests include antennas and propagation, metamaterials, metasurfaces, millimeter-wave and optical systems, plasmonics, sensors, exceptional points, and applied electromagnetics. He has authored 240 journal articles and more than 500 conference presentations, edited two books on metamaterials, and supervised numerous Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers.

I served as Associate Editor for IEEE TAP, TPC Co-Chair of the 2017 IEEE APS/URSI Symposium, future General Co-Chair of the 2028 IEEE APS/URSI Symposium. I have also organized numerous special sessions and mentored many graduate students active in AP-S. Having worked in both Europe and the USA, I bring an international perspective, broad collaborations, and extensive experience in research, education, and conference organization.

- Prof. Capolino was the main actor in creating the new EU Doctoral School of Metamaterials in 2004 when he was part of the EU Network of Excellence Metamorphose when he was affiliated with the University of Siena. An agreement was signed by many EU universities accepting student credits earned at such school. Prof. Capolino was the director till he moved to the University of California in 2008.
Position Statement:
As a member of the IEEE AP-S AdCom, I will work to strengthen the Society’s global reach, interdisciplinary leadership, and engagement with emerging technologies and industry. Having developed my career in both Europe and the United States, I bring a broad international perspective and strong connections across research, educational, and professional communities on both continents. My multidisciplinary experience spanning antennas and propagation, metamaterials, optics, photonics, and vacuum electronics positions me to help AP-S expand collaborations with neighboring technical fields and promote innovative research directions shaping future electromagnetic technologies. I am particularly committed to fostering stronger partnerships between academia and industry to accelerate innovation, support student career development, and increase opportunities for young professionals. I will actively support initiatives that enhance technical excellence, international collaboration, industrial participation, and interdisciplinary visibility, while maintaining AP-S leadership in both fundamental electromagnetics and advanced applied technologies.

Mauro Ettorre
Biography:
Mauro Ettorre (M’08–SM’15-F’23) received a Laurea degree “summa cum laude” in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D. degree in Electromagnetics from the University of Siena, Italy, in 2004 and 2008, respectively. Part of his Ph.D. work was conducted at TNO, the Netherlands. Since 2023, he has been a Professor at Michigan State University, USA. Previously, he was a Research Scientist at CNRS, IETR, France. From 2014 until 2020, he co-led the multi-beam antenna activity in the joint laboratory between IETR and Thales Alenia Space. From 2016 to 2021, he led the mm- and sub-mm waves team at IETR.
His research interests encompass the analysis and design of quasi-optical systems, millimeter-wave antennas, non-diffractive radiation, and wireless power transmission. His research activities have been recognized with several awards, including the Innovation Award at the 2018 ESA Antenna Workshop, Best Paper Awards at EuCAP 2018 and 2021, and Best Paper Award at iWAT 2023.

I am an active member of IEEE AP-S, where I have contributed in various roles. I am well-acquainted with the organization's mission, goals, and overall purpose in serving our society. Throughout my volunteer work, I have demonstrated the highest level of professionalism, as recognized by my peers. Over the years, I have gained significant experience serving on international administrative committees, which require a strong consensus-building approach and high ethical standards. I believe that these experiences, combined with my technical expertise, make me an exceptional candidate for the IEEE AP-S AdCom.
Major Accomplishments:
- Track and associate editor, IEEE TAP: Since 2017, I have contributed to the quality of TAP. My annual reports by the EiC show my commitment to improving the quality of the journal and the high standards of IEEE.
- Representative IEEE AP-S, IEEE WPT Initiative: Since I joined the initiative, AP-S has been an active member by contributing to short courses (APS-2024) and the creation of the first IEEE WPT journal. AP-S will have the second-largest number of shares in the future journal.
- Major technical contribution: I introduced the concept of quasi-optical systems to drive large antenna arrays. The impact of this contribution has been recognized by my peers with my elevation to the grade of IEEE Fellow.
- AP-S promotion: throughout my career, I supported initiatives to spark interest in young students and the larger society by means of workshops, schools, podcasts, interviews, and social events on AP-S topics.
Position Statement:
Young generations are the backbone of a thriving and healthy society. I will promote and expand the current tools available to attract young students to our society. These initiatives may include workshops, blogs, and podcasts that showcase how AP-S addresses societal challenges that resonate with young people.
Collaboration is essential for success. I will foster synergy among IEEE AP-S regions, partner societies, academia, and industry. We should expand partnerships and mobility programs to create a conducive environment for collaboration and the exchange of ideas.
We have seen a rising number of submissions to our journals. I will advocate for the inclusion of non-volunteer editorial figures to streamline the reviewing process while maintaining the quality and timeliness of our journals.
Additionally, we have noticed a decline in participation at our flagship conference. I will promote the creation of a steering committee to attract interest from both academia and industry.

Candidate Name:
Nima Ghalichechian
Biography:
Dr. Ghalichechian is an Associate Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA. He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology, Tehran, Iran in 2001. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Maryland-College Park in 2005 and 2007, respectively. From 2007 to 2012, he was Senior Principal Engineer at Formfactor Inc., Livermore, CA. He joined Ohio State University as a Research Scientist in 2012. He was a tenure-track Assistant Professor from 2017 to 2021.
He joined the School of ECE at Georgia Tech, as an Assistant Professor in 2021. He became a tenured Associate Professor in 2024. He is currently the Director of the mmWave Antennas and Arrays Laboratory. He is the recipient of the 2024 Roger Webb Outstanding Junior Faculty Award at Georgia Tech, 2020 ECE Excellence in Teaching Award at OSU, 2019 NSF CAREER Award, and 2019 AFRL Faculty Fellowship.

Qualifications:
I have been an active IEEE member for 28 years, including five in industry and 12 within AP-S. My research team leads pioneering work in mmWave arrays, on-chip antennas, and VO2 PCM devices, while my teaching awards demonstrate a deep commitment to the IEEE educational mission. I have served on AP-S journal editorial boards, the Technical Committee on Arrays, and as a conference session organizer. These roles have provided me with a keen understanding of our society’s history and future challenges, which I am prepared to leverage to advance the goals of the AP-S AdCom.
Major Accomplishments:
I am the Director of the mmWave Antennas and Arrays Laboratory at Georgia Tech. I have successfully established research in mmWave phased arrays, reconfigurable antennas, reflect-arrays, on-chip antennas, and phase-change materials. Of most importance is the mentorship of young Ph.D. students. I have mentored and graduated 9 Ph.D. students as a sole advisor and five as a co-advisor. I am currently mentoring and advising 8 Ph.Ds. students. I also support B.Sc. and M.Sc. students with short-term research projects. I have published 50 and 75 journal articles and conference proceedings, respectively, mostly with my students. I have redesigned graduate-level Microwave Design and undergraduate-level Electromagnetics and Antenna Engineering courses at Georgia Tech. I have served as an Associate Director for Georgia Electronic Design Center for two years as well as the editorial board of TAP and AWPL for 2 and 4 years, respectively.
Position Statement:
My leadership will focus on two pillars: empowering the next generation and modernizing technical discourse. First, drawing on my experience mentoring 15 Ph.D. students, educating undergraduates, and receiving an excellence teaching award, I will champion a formal mentorship framework and new awards specifically for junior researchers. I will actively promote existing AP-S initiatives, like the Talent Development Fund and Ambassador Program, to bridge the transition from student to young professional. Second, I will evolve our conference culture by introducing interactive panels and “lessons-learned” sessions. Having served as an Associate Editor for TAP and AWPL, I recognize that scientific progress often stems from discussing past failures and experimental hurdles. I will advocate for friendly Q&A settings that encourage younger members to share bold ideas. By fostering a more transparent and supportive environment, I will ensure AP-S remains a vibrant, innovative home for all members.

Jawad Y. Siddiqui
Biography:
Jawad Siddiqui has over two decades of experience in applied electromagnetics, RF/microwave circuits, antennas, and propagation, with teaching and research appointments across Canada and India. He is currently a Senior Research Associate at the Royal Military College of Canada and an Adjunct Faculty at Queen’s University and an Associate Professor (on leave) in the Department of Radio Physics and Electronics, University of Calcutta.
He currently serves as Chair of the IEEE AP-S SIGHT and has contributed to several committees within the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society.
He is the recipient of the 2022 Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE)–S.N. Mitra Memorial Award for his contributions and leadership in radio broadcast science and technology. He was awarded with the IEEE SIGHT volunteer of the year in 2022. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and a member of IEEE Eta Kappa Nu.

Dr. Jawad Siddiqui has been an active IEEE AP-S volunteer since 2003 and has chaired the AP-S SIGHT Committee since 2021, leading its humanitarian initiatives. He is well versed in AP-S operations and currently serves on several AP-S committees.

Cristina Yepes
Biography:
Cristina Yepes received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Telecommunication Engineering from the Public University of Navarre, Spain, in 2015, and the Ph.D. degree from Delft University of Technology, in collaboration with TNO Defense, Safety and Security, in 2020. Her work has focused on phased arrays, wide-angle scanning, frequency-selective surfaces, metasurfaces, antenna bounds, and high-frequency radiating systems. She was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Siena in collaboration with Huawei Technologies, working on electromagnetic degrees of freedom, physical antenna limits, superdirective antennas, and metasurface-based systems.
She later joined the Public University of Navarre under the LANs-6G project, contributing to antenna solutions for 5G, 6G, and New Space applications. Since May 2023, she has been an Antenna Scientist at TNO, developing advanced antenna and metasurface technologies for radar, space, and defense systems.
