Danilo Erricolo

Biography:

Danilo Erricolo (M’99-SM’03-F’16) is a Professor in the ECE Department at the University of Illinois Chicago, and the Director of the Andrew Electromagnetics Laboratory. He was an Air Force Faculty Fellow at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He has been an elected member of the executive committees of the Graduate College, Faculty Senate and University Senates Conference.

He has authored or coauthored more than 360 publications in refereed international journals and conferences and 6 book chapters.

His primary research interests are in electromagnetic scattering, high-frequency techniques, computation of special functions, wireless communications, electromagnetic compatibility, and magnetic resonance imaging. He is among the pioneers of Radio Frequency Tomography.

He is a Fellow of IEEE, the Electromagnetics Academy, AAIA, AIIA, the recipient of the inaugural USNC-URSI Impact Award and received the 2025 IEEE AP-S Outstanding Service Award.

Qualifications:

Dr. Erricolo is internationally recognized in the field of electromagnetics. He is widely known within the AP-S for his contributions to the field and his extensive service. He has a genuine interest in elevating the profile of AP-S and providing value to all of its members, including underserved groups, through technical, networking and outreach opportunities. He has demonstrated his leadership skills in his roles as Editor-in-Chief of the Transactions, General Chairman of the 2012 IEEE AP-S/USNC-URSI, Chapter Chair of AP-S/MTT-S, and Vice-President of Conferences.

He was approached to run for president because of his demonstrated leadership and goals for AP-S.

  • Raised the profile of the journal and achieved unprecedented performance (e.g., bibliographic metrics reached their highest value in 2022, including the impact-factor that more than doubled and reached the value of 5.7).
  • Supervised an editorial board of 80 track editors and associate editors, diversified by active recruitment of women and international scientists from previously underrepresented areas.

Dr. Erricolo is committed to advancing and improving AP-S and its relevancy to its members and the international scientific community. He has extensive experience and a proven track record as AdCom member, Editor-in-Chief of the Transactions, Chair of an APS/URSI Joint Symposium, and a local chapter chair, among other roles, to get the job done. He has diversified the committees he has chaired by active recruitment of women and international scientists from previously underrepresented geographical areas. He has spearheaded outreach to engineering students. He works well with scientists and researchers from all geographical areas.

He is dedicated to increasing the value of APS membership. He is committed to raising the visibility of APS among industry, government, and research institutions. He is willing to listen and act upon innovative ideas that will advance the direction of the APS.

Kamal Sarabandi

Biography:

Kamal Sarabandi (LF IEEE) received the B.S. degree in EE from Sharif University of Technology, in 1980, the M.S. degree in EE in 1986, and the M.S. degree in mathematics and the Ph.D. degree in EE from The University of Michigan in 1989. He is currently Fawwaz Ulaby Distinguished University Professor and holds the Rufus Teesdale endowed chair in the EECS Department at The University of Michigan. His research areas of interest include microwave and millimeter-wave radar remote sensing, Meta-materials, electromagnetic wave propagation, and antenna miniaturization.

He leads an active research group and has graduate 69 Ph.D. students as well as many post-doctoral fellows. He has published many books and book chapters as well as 360 papers in refereed journals and 796 papers in conferences. Professor Sarabandi is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, and the American Association for Advancement of Science. He is a recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor (2024). He is also the recipient of many IEEE Major Awards including the 2025 IEEE Dennis Picard Medal for Radar Technologies and Applications, the 2024 IEEE Electromagnetics Award, The IEEE 2011 Judith A. Resnik Award, and the 2005 IEEE GRSS Distinguished Achievement Award.

Qualifications:

Professor Sarabandi has had a distinguished and exemplary career as an educator and entrepreneur focusing in the field of applied electromagnetics and microwave remote sensing. Professor Sarabandi served as Director of the Radiation Laboratory for more than 20 years and is currently a Distinguished University Professor and holds an endowed chair in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). He is a prolific and world renown researcher who has published more than 1100 impactful refereed journal and conference papers with high citation numbers and 35 best paper awards. As a faculty member, he created many new courses, chaired 69 Ph.D. theses, served as principle investigator and attracted substantial amount of external research funds (well above $70M) to his department. He has held many other leadership positions within the University and outside with a number of IEEE organizations and government agencies. He served as the president of IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, led a major center of search funded by the US Army, and created four successful startups.

Major Accomplishments:

  1. He is the initiator for the establishment of the IEEE AP-S Foundation, aimed at benefiting students and the younger generation interested in the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society's field of interest. The IEEE AP-S Foundation was approved by the IEEE Board of Directors in October 2023.
  2. He recently authored a 616 page text book entitled “Foundations of Applied Electromagnetics,” and in an attempt to promote the field of applied electromagnetics offered this book free of charge to all students and researchers throughout the word. In merely 4 months more 3000 copies of the book were downloaded.
  3. As the executive Vice President and the President of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society he managed to triple GRSS’ operational budget, doubled the number of its chapters around the world, and increased its membership by 30% (at a time that the IEEE membership was declining).
  4. As a member of editorial board of the IEEE Proceedings, Professor Sarabandi, was able to organize and support the inclusion of special issues and articles related to wireless technology antennas and wave propagation.
  5. As a member of IEEE level awards committees (Electromagnetic Awards, James H. Mulligan, Jr. Education Medal, Joseph F. Keithley Award) he has been promoting, supporting, and highlighting the contributions of members of electromagnetic and microwave community.
  6. He has been serving as a member of steering committees and technical program committees of numerous IEEE conference including the IEEE APS/URSI symposia continuously for more than 30 years.

Position Statement:

I am honored to seek the role of President-Elect of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S). Our society has experienced remarkable growth in recent years in membership, conferences, publications, and global engagement. Building on the strong foundation established by our dedicated volunteers and leadership, I am committed to further strengthening and expanding the impact of AP-S worldwide.

As our society has grown significantly over the past five years, I believe it is important to better engage our large network of chapters globally and enhance the structure and operation of the society to better serve our membership. My experience in IEEE leadership roles spanning publications, conferences, finance, awards, education, and diversity initiatives has provided me with a broad perspective on the opportunities ahead.

I am committed to supporting students and young professionals, empowering volunteers, revitalizing chapters, fostering new ones, and strengthening collaborations across IEEE to ensure the continued growth and vitality of AP-S.
