Description

IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) has committed US$102,000 in 2024 to fund 34 Undergraduate Summer Research Scholarships (USRS). The USRS is introduced to promote the Society's areas of interest (listed below) among undergraduate students worldwide to ignite their interest in pursuing graduate studies in these areas. Applications are solicited from undergraduate students in conjunction with a faculty supervisor or industry supervisor to conduct a 16-week research program during the year 2024.

Note: USRSs may be held in conjunction with IEEE AP-S travel grants and other AP-S awards.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply:

• The supervisor must be a member of the IEEE AP-S
• Student must be at the date of the application a full-time registered bachelor's degree (or equivalent) student at an accredited institution in their country
• Student must have a cumulative grade average of 75% or above
• A maximum of two AP-S USRSs are allowed per student in the duration of undergraduate studies
• Student must have completed coursework of at least full two years (4 semesters) of university studies at the date of award commencement
• Student must not have begun a graduate program at any point during the 16-week period of USRS
• Student must be involved on a full-time basis in the proposed project during the 16-week period of the AP-S USRS
• Supervisor is allowed to sponsor no more than one AP-S USRS student during 2024

Value of Awards

• USRS value is US$3,000 to support the duration of the 16-week research project
• Professors and industry supervisors are encouraged to supplement the value of USRS with at least US$750. Applications from teams offering matching funds will be given priority during the selection process
• USRS will be paid directly to the students

Timeframe

• Project must continue for at least 16 weeks during 2024. Projects conducted on consecutive 16 weeks full-time basis will be given a priority
• Project may commence on any date agreeable to both the student and the supervisor.

• Accredited universities worldwide
• Companies having a line of business aligned with AP-S areas of interests (listed below)

Advising Process

Professors and industry supervisors must be individuals who are authorized by the university or company to conduct direct independent supervision of the student in the duration of the 16-week period of USRS. The supervisor must be a member of the IEEE AP Society.

Areas of Interest

Projects must be within the scope of AP-S areas such as: antennas, including analysis, design, development, measurement, and testing; radiation, propagation, and the interaction of electromagnetic waves with discrete and continuous media; and applications and systems pertinent to antennas, propagation, and sensing, such as applied optics, millimeter- and submillimeter-wave techniques, antenna signal processing and control, radio astronomy, and propagation and radiation aspects of terrestrial and space-based communication, including wireless, mobile, satellite, and telecommunications.

Application Process

Student together with their supervisor must fill out the one-page application form containing the outline of the proposed research project (see the application template accompanying this Call for Proposals) and must submit the student’s official current transcript with the information required to confirm eligibility. If the information required for confirmation of eligibility is unavailable in the official transcript, proposed supervisors must write a one-page support letter indicating how each of the eligibility criteria is fulfilled. Other supporting documents may not exceed 2 pages; overlength pages will be trimmed before the review process.

Evaluation Process

Evaluation of the applications will be conducted by the AP-S Membership/Benefits Committee and Education Committee based on the following 3 criteria:

• Academic standing of the student
• Quality of the proposed research project
• Quality of the training

Projects may be conducted, however, during any 16-weeks period from the time of award to December 31, 2024.

Notification of Results

IEEE AP-S will send an award decision to each applicant after the screening process is completed.

USRS Payment

Student will receive USRS payment in one installment of US$3000 each. The installment will be processed upon commencement of the project. AP-S will require students to fill out and submit forms W8/9 to process the payments.

Project Report

Recipients of the AP-S USRS will have to submit a final report describing the accomplishments of their project by December 31, 2024. In lieu of the report, the student can submit a copy of the paper or slides on the USRS project presented or submitted to an AP-S sponsored conference.

Travel Allowances

USRS is not intended for travel expenses.
