IEEE APS 2021 Student Travel Grant

The IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) Membership and Benefits Committee have approved to support 20 PhD students with a travel grant of 1000 USD to participate in person at the 2021 IEEE AP-S Symposium on Antennas and Propagation (APS 2021) that will take place between 4-10 December 2021 in Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. The selection committee was led by Prof. Mohammad S. Sharawi, Polytechnique Montreal, Canada. 13 applicants were granted this award, they are:

 
Agarwal

Shobit Agarwal: is currently associated with the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Technology, “Guglielmo Marconi”, University of Bologna, Italy where he is pursuing his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Alessandra Costanzo and Prof. Diego Masotti. His accepted paper at APS 2021 is entitled “A Hybrid RFID/Localization Antenna with HIS and 3D-Printed Inclusions”.

Mr. Agarwal received his Bachelor in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Rajasthan Technical University, Kota (India) in the year 2012 and a Master’s degree in ECE from The LNM Institute of Information Technology, Jaipur (India) in 2016. His research area includes UWB and SWB antennas, metamaterials, intelligent reflective surfaces, and frequency selective surfaces. He is a graduate student member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE), USA; IEEE-Antennas and Propagation Society, USA.

Ahmad

Wael A. Ahmad: received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering “electronics and communications” from Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt, in 2007 and 2012, respectively. From 2008 to 2016, he worked on the development of RF/microwave high-power amplifiers and microwave modules in sub-6 GHz and C-band in Egypt. Since 2016 he serves as a Radar Research Scientist, pursuing his Ph.D. with the Technical university of Berlin in mm-wave BiCMOS radar sensors and integrated antenna technologies. Furthermore, he has been an affiliate member of the IEEE MTT-S Microwave/mm-wave Radar, Sensing and Array Systems technical committee MTT-24 since 2021.

His PhD supervisor is Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Dietmar Kissinger. And the title of the accepted paper at APS 2021 is "A D-Band Stacked Patch Antenna with Air Trenches in BiCMOS Technology".

Babazadeh

Omid Babazadeh is a Ph.D. candidate in computational electromagnetics under the supervision of Prof. Okhmatovski at the University of Manitoba, Canada. His research interests are in high-order methods and fast algorithms for the solution of integral equations. In his M.Sc. program, he was working on microwave imaging at the University of Tabriz, Iran.

His accepted paper in APS 2021 is entitled “H-Matrix Fast Direct Solution of Scattering Problems with Locally Corrected Nystrom Discretized Electric Field Integral Equation”.

Dutta

Debi Dutta: is presently pursuing Doctoral research in the Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics, University of Calcutta, India. She started her Ph.D. in December 2019 and is currently holding CSIR-MHRD, Govt. of India, fellowship. Her advisor is Prof. Debatosh Guha, University of Calcutta. Her research interest covers printed antennas and arrays, antenna cross-polarization, MIMO, LTE and 5G antennas. She is serving the role of SBC chair (2019-present) in IEEE APS-SBC of the University of Calcutta and an active volunteer (201-present) in the IEEE AP/MTT-S Kolkata Chapter.

Her accepted paper in APS 2021 is entitled “Improvement of Rectangular Microstrip Antenna by Mode Specific Meta Element Concept”.

VILLA GONZALEZ

FÁTIMA VILLA-GONZÁLEZ, is a PhD student in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering department at Tecnun, University of Navarra (Spain) and at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Auto-ID Lab (Cambridge, MA). Her research work is focused on wireless and chipless RFID sensor systems. She received the B.S. degree and the M.Sc. in Telecommunications Engineering from Tecnun in 2017 and 2019 and joined MIT Auto ID-Lab in 2019 to complete her master's thesis. Her PhD advisor is Dr. Daniel Valderas (Tecnun, University of Navarra, Spain) and her co-advisor is Dr. Rahul Bhattacharyya (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA).

The title of the paper she will present at IEEE APS 2021 is: “Chipless RFID Tag Detection with a Single Measurement in Presence of Multipath”.

Inojosa

Raynell A. Inojosa is a second year PhD student in the Department of Electronics Engineering at Batangas State University, Philippines. His advisor is Dr. Jeffrey Sarmiento. His Areas of research are: Artificial Neural Network for Antenna Design, High-efficiency Horn Antenna, and ICT for Sustainable Development. His accepted paper in APS 2021 is entitled “Prediction of Aperture Efficiency Performance of a Square Aperture Horn Antenna operated at X-band using Artificial Neural Network”.

Jayakrishnan

Aswathi Jayakrishnan is a PhD student from the Department Of Electronics, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Cochin, India. Her advisor is Dr. Deepti Das Krishna. She is doing research in the topic of Time Modulated Antenna Arrays for Direction Finding. Basically the suggested topic is advantageous in terms of its simplicity, low cost and good accuracy. It can be used for various applications such as direction finding, beam steering, etc.

Her accepted paper at APS 2021 is entitled “Direction Finding System using two Modulated Arrays”.

Kashyap

Bharath Kashyap is an Electrical Engineering Ph.D. student at Arizona State University, Tempe, USA. He is working with Prof. George Trichopoulos’s group since 2020 and focusses on programmable electromagnetic surfaces for 5G wireless communication applications. After his master’s degree from ASU in 2018, he was with Intel Corporation, Chandler, AZ, USA, as a Failure Analysis R&D Engineer (2018-2020). His research interests include antennas, electromagnetics, and microwaves.

His accepted paper at APS 2021 is with the title “A Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface for 5G Wireless Communication Applications”.

Kaur

Jaspreet Kaur is a PhD in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow, Scotland. Her advisors are Dr Hasan T Abbas, Dr Qammer H Abbasi and Prof Muhammad Ali Imran. Her areas of research are Microwaves, Telecommunication and 5G technologies. She is supported by a PhD studentship from the EIT Digital EU in partnership with Telefonica UK. Prior to this, she completed his Masters in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University, Ankara, Turkey.

Her accepted paper at APS 2021 is entitled “Enhancing wave propagation via Contextual Beamforming”.

Menon

Shreya S. Menon is currently working doing her PhD under the supervision of Dr. Deepti Das Krishna at the Department of Electronics, Cochin University of Science and Technology. She is also serving as Junior Research Fellow at Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research, Cochin University of Science & Technology. Her area of research is Solid dielectric antennas & arrays. The title of her accepted paper at APS 2021 is “Guided and Leaky Mode Radiation Characteristics of Solid Dielectric Pyramidal Horn Antenna”.

Muppala

Aditya Varma Muppala is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His research focus in on Millimeter-wave imaging radars. He is co-advised by Prof. Ehsan Afshari and Prof. Kamal Sarabandi. He is a co-author on the following papers: "Dynamic Dual-Reflector Antennas for High-Resolution Real-Time SAR Imaging" and "Real-Time Dielectric Sensing of Liquids using Waveguide Supercoupling" that will be presented at the APS 2021.

Ramos

Amélia Ramos received the M. Sc. degree in electronics and telecommunications engineering from the University of Aveiro, Aveiro, Portugal, in 2018. She joined the Instituto de Telecomunicações in 2019. She is currently working in smart antennas for mm-wave applications, with emphasis on phased-arrays, antennas for satellite communication systems, and multi-band radiating structures, always under the guidance of Prof. Dr. João Nuno Matos and Dr. Tiago Varum. For APS 2021 she has two accepted papers: i)“ Compact Circularly Polarized Aperture Fed Patch Antenna for LEO Satellite Constelations” and ii) “A Wideband Stripline-to-Stripline Transition for K/Ka-Bands”.

Stutts

Alex C. Stutts is a PhD student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois Chicago. He is an NSF Bridge to the Doctorate Fellow as well as a GEM Fellow. He currently serves as Secretary of the IEEE AP-S/MTT-S Chicago Joint Chapter. His research is focused on biomedical applications of electromagnetics, and his advisor is Prof. Danilo Erricolo. Alex will be presenting “Embedded Split Ring Resonator Tunable Notch Band Filter in Transmission Lines” at the APS 2021 conference.
